CLIMBING WALL INSTRUCTOR

The Climbing Wall Instructor (CWI) qualification, administered by Mountain Training, enables individuals to deliver climbing sessions at climbing walls. It is widely recognized as an essential qualification for those working in the climbing industry.

The CWI program is not only valuable for individuals seeking employment in the industry but also for climbers who want to enhance their personal skills and stay updated with current best practices.

To obtain the CWI qualification, candidates must complete a training course and pass a separate assessment. It is recommended that candidates allow a minimum of 6 months between the training and assessment courses to consolidate the techniques learned and further develop their personal and group skills.

By completing the CWI training course and passing the assessment, individuals acquire the necessary skills and knowledge to deliver climbing sessions at climbing walls professionally and safely. This qualification is highly regarded in the industry and is considered essential for those seeking employment in climbing centers and working with various groups, including schools and voluntary organizations. Additionally, climbers who pursue the CWI qualification can enhance their personal skills and expand their understanding of current best practices in the field.

Before you come on a training course you must be 17 or over, have registered for the award with the Mountain Training and have lead indoors on at least 10 occasions.

These courses are based either in Leeds at Big Depot or at Awesome Walls and The Foundry in Sheffield.

CWI TRAINING £160/£210 WITH ABSEIL MODULE

The two day training covers such skills as:

  • lead climbing

  • correct use of equipment

  • group management

  • coaching movement and instructing climbing

  • emergency procedures

  • problem avoidance and simple rescues

At the end of the course all candidates will receive one to one feedback from the instructor giving them a detailed overview of any potential areas that need work and a realistic time-scale to assessment. Download program here.

CWI ASSESSMENT £115/£175 WITH ABSEIL MODULE

The one day assessment will cover all areas of the syllabus. You will be assessed at your personal climbing and group management. The program can be found here.
